When I bought this double vinyl in 1994, I was totally shocked by the stunning beauty of Aphex Twin’s music. Sure, sometimes he drops disturbing industrial hardcore beats. But the Ambient pieces on this album belong to the most beautiful music I’ve ever heard. Music is not just notes. A beautiful melody can sound silly, when played with the wrong intensity or the wrong instrument. Richard D. James uses noise to create the most beautiful melodies in the world. Especially the track Rhubarb still makes me shed a tear or two because it touches me in a very emotional way.
It’s terrifically beautiful, deep, melancholic and so very stripped down to the bone.
Please play that tune on my funeral.
I’m glad that I found this album on YouTube with actual track IDs, so you can skip back and fourth through 2 and a half hours of Aphex Twin awesomeness. Go to the YouTube >>HERE<<!
And if you crave for even more Selected Ambient Works by the man, try Volume 1 >>HERE<<!
A bit dark for a Sunday, I know, but so is the sky today over Berlin.
Enjoy!
