Today I want to share with you a view on my studio from 1993. Please excuse the poor picture quality, I took it from this well-known documentary <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OLEyOYC6P4>
This is the setup, that I used for my first LoopZone and Microglobe productions, some tracks with Tanith and DJ Hell as well as the notorious "Schöneberg"-track by Marmion.
You can see the black-and-white screen of my failthful Atari ST-1040. In front of it a Roland E24 mixer with 3-band EQ. We send MIDI from the Atari to the hardware synths and drumboxes, mixed their audio in the Roland Mixer, had an Alesis Compressor inserted in the master buss and recorded the stereo signal straight on a consumer Sony DAT.
Right from the mixer there are 303 + 606 + 101 that were synced to MIDI clock. Since we could not record single audio tracks in the DAW (because there were no DAWs yet 😉 every 303 twiddleing action was a one-off performance straight to DAT, no more additional edits possible (an Atari ST was called 1040, because it only had a RAM of 1 MB -yes, mega-byte. There were no harddisks yet, all MIDI data was saved on floppy discs containing 700 kb.
My sampler in those days was a Yamaha TX16W 12-bit sampler with a sample RAM of 3 MB (which was HUGE!).
On the right you can see the Jupiter-6 that provided the chord sound in "Schöneberg".
I shared this studio with Johannes Talirz, who did occasional live acts with me and released music under the name Positive Thinking <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OLEyOYC6P4>.
