Very good news today: Japan’s 67-year-old “No Dancing Law”, the so-called “Fueiho” has been finally repealed. This law has been brought to action after World War 2 to crack down on prostitution in dance halls. According to the law, all dancing must be stopped by midnight. Having travelled and performed in Japan since 1994, I was perfectly used to people dancing after midnight. I had heard about the law, but only when this was forced more and more into Osaka’s Kansei area in 2013, I put an eye on this, also thanks to the great documentation by Resident Advisor.
A lot of DJs, promoters and personal friends of mine like top DJ/ producer Takkyu Ishino have been outspoken against this law and finally a campaign led by world-famous Japanese music icon Ryuichi Sakamoto gained 150,000 signatures. The new law has been ratified and starting from 2016, the Fueiho will be fnally history.
Rumours say that the abolition of the ban goes in hand with the upcoming 2020 Olympics.
