Japanese TV visits Mijk in his studio in 1998

Japanese TV visited Mijk in the summer of 1998 in his Berlin studio next to Wittenbergplatz and produced a nice video feature . Long-haired Mijk explains how he works with drum machines, synthesizers, samplers and Cubase on his first Macintosh computer. Note from 2014: this is how we did Techno in the late 90s, still with […]

Marcos López and me were invited to disucss and perform in the music show Eurotops on East-German TV channel MDR. The topic was dance music and how people interact with it. Marmion – Berlin EP – Superstition 004

In 1993, my friend Marcos Lopez and me composed a classic which two decades later still spreads ecstasy and goose bumps on the dance floors around the world. The Marmion Berlin EP was composed and produced in my studio in Schöneberg and hence one tune was in fact called “Schöneberg”.

Classic Mijk van Dijk Interview with Marcos López on DT64

Little did Mijk van Dijk and Marcos López know back in 1992 that they would only one year later release an EP with a track called Schöneberg which would stand as a classic of Techno music even decades later. In 1992 Mijk had just released his first EPs and in conjunction with Cosmic Baby produced […]

Telepathic Bubblebath Open Air Jam

Telepathic Bubblebath Open Air Jam

I was totally in awe when I discovered Michael Rother‘s first solo album “Flammende Herzen” as a young boy. I tried to learn the beautiful guitar solos on that album, but of course I failed and later decided to play the bass instead. When I had already abandoned the bass in favor of electronic instruments, my path crossed with my still good friend Harald Blüchel, who had just composed his first solo album “Stellar Supreme” as Cosmic Baby on MFS Records. The early 90s were inspirational years for me and helped me create music which is still beloved by many people around this microglobe, which I am really thankful for. Imagine now you get the chance to jam with the artists that you admired, when you were a kid. Further imagine you get the chance to jam again with the artists that you started your career with. And then imagine that all will be part of an all-day long session with your musical family from Liquid Sky Berlin. Exactly this will happen on Saturday July 27th at Else in Berlin! I will be jamming with legendary musicians like Michael Rother+ (Ex-Kraftwerk/ Neu/ Harmonia), FM EInheit (Einstürzende Neubauten), Harald Blüchel (aka Cosmic Baby), Dr. Walker and Cem Oral (aka Air Liquide), Nerk (TokTok), Supporting DJs and acts will be Renaat Vandepapeliere (R&S Records), Corin Arnold (aka ED2000) and of course those notorious members of  the Liquid Sky Berlin family like Audiosex (aka ADSX, Injection Records), Elec Ice, Bad Bad Tom, Monsieur Fleury, Datis 5 L, Klaus & Achim Selbst  and Der Schwarze Roy. This legendary event will take place at Else, the Open Air area of club Wilde Renate in Berlin on Saturday July 27th 2013 from 10 am to 10 pm. First jam sessions will start at 11 am. For ticket acquisition I recommend Rotation Records store at Rosenthaler Platz in Berlin-Mitte. The event on Resident...

Mijk van Dijk – OK Oklahoma – Super Cell Charity Compilation – PIN23

This is my contribution to a Charity Compilation to aid the people from Oklahoma/ USA. On the afternoon of May 20, 2013 an EF5 tornado struck Moore, Oklahoma and adjacent areas with peak winds estimated at 210 miles per hour (340 km/h), killing 23 people and injuring 377 others. The tornado was part of a larger weather system that had produced several other tornadoes over the previous two days. The EF5 is now on record as the largest Tornado in recorded history measuring 2.6 miles in width. Among the hardest hit areas were two public schools: Briarwood Elementary School and Plaza Towers Elementary School. At the latter school, 75 children and staff were present when the tornado struck. Seven children died at Plaza Towers Elementary School. Requirements for safe rooms in public schools vary from community to community across the swath of Midwestern and Southern states so accustomed to lethal twisters that it is known as Tornado Alley. In Oklahoma and in bordering states, land-use regulations are often derided as unnecessary government intrusions. State building codes do not require that schools provide safe rooms, leaving the decision to individual school districts. FEMA distributes grant money to states after major disasters to give communities an incentive to rebuild smarter and to avoid costlier disasters in the future. But support is limited, and local school districts still must come up with around a quarter of the costs for storm improvements. I have been asked by Oklahoma based Liquid Sky family member James Hawley to donate a track for a special release on his PIN23 Net Label as a fundraiser release for the Shelter Oklahoma Schools Project, which I happily agreed on. I created a dirty house track with a sweaty beat and a positive shout-out to the people from Oklahoma. Check the credits on the tracklisting and you will notice that most members of the worldwide Liquid Sky family are involved in this project with many exclusive tracks that you cannot get anywhere else but on this fine compilation. This compilation is NOT on sale on Beatport or other download stores to make sure that every cent goes to the good cause. All sales will go to Shelter Oklahoma Schools, which was created with the purpose of providing storm shelters in and around Oklahoma schools and communities. I hope this compilation will raise a few dollars, spotlight the situation in the desaster areas and encourage the people from Oklahoma, that they are not alone in this. Mijk van Dijk feat. Michiyo Honda – My Wire To You – WIRE13 Compilation

Mijk van Dijk feat. Michiyo Honda – My Wire To You – WIRE13 Compilation

As usual the Japanese WIRE festival releases a compilation. When I played there for the first time in 1999 I wrote a tune called Lite My Wire to celebrate the festival and my friends in Japan. This time again I took the opportunity to do something special. I am a big fan of Japanese Electro pop outfit Overrocket, the band of my friend Takashi Watanabe (not to be confused with DJ Warp, who has the same name).  I met Takashi-san already in the 90s  when he was producing for Denki Groove and Takkyu Ishino‘s solo works. Then he established his electro pop band Overrocket and released some great albums. Their self-titled album Overrocket is my favourite. I also had the pleasure to see them live in Japan. And I always wanted to invite Overrocket singer Michiyo Honda to collaborate on a song with me. Now the time felt just right and I am happy to announce my official contribution to the WIRE13 compilation: My Wire To You. The compilation will be out on August 14th through Sony Japan and for all you Gaijins I will try to post you links to download shops, where you can find it without having to learn Japanese first. 😉 By the way: domo arigato gozaimasu to Takashi-san for recording Michiyo’s sweet vocals in Tokyo so...

motherfunk on homesick.fm

Hah, don’t worry, I am not gonna move my monthly NuFunk/ Boogie show motherfunk from BLN.fm to another radio station. But I would like to recommend an iPhone app here. As most of you might already know, BLN.fm is a web based radio that you cannot receive on your old AM/FM radio set. Yet! But from now on, I have my AM/FM radio always in my pocket, with this nice new app called homesick.fm. In the free version you can decide for one city of your choice (which is of course Berlin in my case) and listen to all the stations from that city. All the stations are located on the FM range where you would find them also on your ordinary AM/FM radio. And guess what: on the far left of the Berlin section, there is our very own station BLN.fm, playing electronic music far from the ordinary 24 hours a day. And home of yours truely motherfunk. So make sure to get the app until July 18th and dial in at 18h CET for episode #33 of my show. To listen to the last (and all past) episodes go...
